When you install Active Directory, you are prompted to enter a domain name for your down-level clients to authenticate against -- this should be the same name as your existing NT4 domain. As long as you have the appropriate name resolution services running, especially WINS, your down-level clients should address the AD servers as they did before. Keep in mind that your down-level clients will not be able to use the Active Directory features like DFS, Kerberos and the like.
