Can I edit the port assignment for USB/COM adapters?
I am trying to install a USB to four serial port adapters to my Windows 2000 machine. I want to know if there is a way to force Windows into using a certain set of com numbers, like com12 ,com13, com14 and com15. I know Windows will use the first available com port numbers, but I am looking for a way to ensure that I can pick them. Or, even if after they are installed, I want to be able to run a sort of script to change them all. I want to do this with out using the control panel, and manually changing them all. If you have any ideas please let me know.
This may be possible depending on how the driver for the device is implemented. I haven't had experience with USB/COM: adapters, but chances are you may be able to edit the port assignment for the port by editing its properties in the Device Manager after it's installed.
