Can I leave Win2k machine in mixed mode on NT4 domain?

I have an NT4 domain. I am adding a Win2k server that will eventually become the DC. Currently I don't have the space necessary to upgrade the NT4 box to Win2000. Can I just add the Win2k box to the domain and leave it in mixed mode?
When upgrading an NT4 domain to Windows 2000, the first machine you need to upgrade is the PDC. You can add the Win2k box and leave it as a member server until you can upgrade the PDC. Another option would be to install the new box as an NT4 BDC, then promote the new BDC to the PDC role and use the new, pristine box for the upgrade.
