It sounds like you're used to a UNIX environment, where this usually happens automatically. It's definitely not as straightforward in a Windows environment, but it can be done. I'm sure there are free scripts available to do it on the Internet if you search around. Here is a commercial solution I found after a quick search: http://www.dashtech.com/products/userdir/.
