Can you recommend a good Java compiler?

Can you recommend a good Java compiler?

I have started to learn Java. Could you suggest a good Java compiler? JDK requires DOS and its debug facility is no good. Visual Age for Java by IBM make applications for Windows 2000 or higher, and some other OS. Do you know of any compiler that can run on any system and has good debugging and programming facilities? Thanks.
I haven't developed for Java in quite a while. However, my friends that are doing Java development say very good things about the IBM development environment. If you mean by any system, you'll have to use on of the myriad of command line compilers.
