Can't download critical updates to the client workstation after installing SUS

We installed SUS properly on the server but were unable to download critical updates to the client workstation. We followed the procedures in Micrsoft's "Deployment White Paper", but my clients are unable to access the local update server (http://servername). We get the "under construction" message. I don't want to use Group Policy. Any ideas?
Make sure to check the clients and your server so that they can access the resources they need through local or network-wide firewall or proxy. I suspect you have firewall access issues.
