I have installed several Win2k based epos systems, which use an external modem for credit card authorization. Frequently, the modem becomes "not connected" in device manager and I have to scan for hardware changes to get it back. I have experienced similar problems with serial and parallel receipt printers. I have applied the latest drivers and service packs and could really use some help on this one.
When devices "drop" spontaneously and consistently, that is often a sign of a problem with the interface. My own experiences with 1394/Firewire devices were along the same lines, and I found that the firmware on the interface needed to be upgraded to fix the problem.
