How can I add a former PDC/BDC Win2k Advanced Server to my network as a regular computer?

I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server that is no longer needed as a primary domain controller/backup domain controller. I want to add it to an existing network as a regular computer.

I could install Windows XP on it, but that would result in the loss of all the installed applications, some of which no longer have the initial install diskettes.

How can I reduce this system to a simple Win2k workstation or, at the very least, remove its domain controller status so that I can join it to an existing domain?
Demote the domain controller using Dcpromo.exe. See the KB article Q238369.
