How can I entirely remove items from the startup tab?

MSCONFIG in Windows XP lists programs to start at bootup on the startup tab. How do I remove items entirely (not just uncheck them) from the startup tab?
There are a few ways to do this, but the most direct way is just to edit their presence in the registry. Startup items are stored in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Generally, it's best to disable them before deleting them through MSCONFIG, so as to make sure they do not delete something crucial.
