How can I map my Windows 2000 users' network drives?

I have seen problems with a remote Windows 2000 system dialing into an NT 4 network through either RAS or VPN. While the system can connect to the network, the logon script that calls a kix script will not map the users' network drives. I have also noticed that the network servers cannot be reached through the network neighborhood. If the drives are mapped manually (I created a batch file for them in the mean time) they can access resources without a problem. When the remote computers are in-house, the logon script executes without a hitch. Do you have any advice?
The most likely reason for the failure of the scripts to run is that the users are connecting to the network via VPN after they have logged onto the local machine. They should log on using the "Use dial-up connection" option in the log on dialog box.
