How can I verify that a SUS client is installed properly?

I am running Windows XP and have been trying to get the SUS client installed and running. After searching, I found that Windows 2000 SP2 and Windows XP are already supposed to have this built in. But the Microsoft documentation mentions checking the version of the wuaueng.dll file to see if the SUS client is ready to be configured and run. Looking at this, the version I have is not new enough. How can I verify that the SUS client is installed properly and how can I configure it?
Yes, Windows XP does include the AutoUpdate client. You probably only need to configure the AutoUpdate client settings on the Windows XP computer. Take a look at the this page for a list of the registry settings you need to modify.

Note that if you are running Active Directory, you'll need to import a group policy and modify the policy so that the computers receive the updated settings automatically. See the SUS Deployment Guide whitepaper for complete information: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/susdeployment.mspx.
