How can we use SMS to create packages for software installs and updates?

How should an enterprise with a mixed Windows 98/Windows 2000 desktop environment use SMS to successfully create packages for software installs and updates?
Most applications will use their own installation methods. The majority use the Windows Installer (MSI) technology, so you can just place the proper command lines in your SMS package and advertisement information. If you are attempting to deploy applications that you are repackaging, you will want to generate a script for each operating system type.

When you need to pinpoint specific operating system types, create a collection based on the inventoried operating system information and distribute the appropriate package.
