I have a Toshiba Sattelite that I bought in October 1999, and it's never been defragmented. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to PCs, and this particlular machine has grown incredibly slow over time. I started defragmenting it last night, and this morning, it said only 1 percent was complete. I'm fearing it'll say the exact same thing when I get home tonight. Any tips would be appreciated as I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong. I did turn off the screensaver and shut all other programs down before beginning the procedure. Thanks.
The time it takes to defragment a computer depends on several factors. The main factor is the size of your hard disk and the amount of occupied space. The more data that has to be moved, the longer the defrag run will take.
The computer you mentioned should have a disk below 10 gigabytes. This may take up to a day, but certainly no longer. I think your issue might be larger files that the defragger is unable to move. Or perhaps some other applications are locking files and this is not being handled correctly.
I reccomend trying a third-party defragger. There are several tools available online -- just conduct a simple search. If you run Windows XP, I would recommend trying O&O Defrag.
