How would Active Directory work in conjunction with LDAP without third-party vendor software?

How would Active Directory work in conjunction with LDAP without third-party vendor software?

For example, I have an application within my intranet with a Web page where users login with a 'http' password. I want to use LDAP to validate the user ID and password, then go to the application's address (all this just because single sign-on is requested).

Because Active Directory is based on LDAP, you can often use AD as an LDAP repository for interoperability with very few changes or additions. Check out this link from Microsoft for some good information to get you started. .
