Newbie seeking books to learn programming syntax

Hi, John. I'm a newbie and I'm trying to get a handle on the syntax. I was wondering if you knew of any Web sites or maybe a book that would help me out. I'm five weeks into an intro to programming class and I'm finding it a lot harder then I thought it would be. The class does not teach one particular language; it's more about the concepts and terms. Can you help?
Since you don't mention the syntax of what language, it'll be hard to recommend a book. As I'm more familiar with C/C++ and Visual Basic development than other types, I'll recommend the following:

  • For C: The C Programming Language by Kernigan and Ritchie
  • For C++ : Learning C++ by Neil Graham
  • For VB: The Microsoft Visual Basic documentation
