Saving password on WIn2k dial up networking and IE connection

Problem: Dial up networking and Win IE 5.0 connection tab. Save password gets overwritten with sixteen star passcode every time and I am unable to automate logon process--have to insert password every time rather than save it. I am a single user as administrator with Win2000
The sixteen stars you see (****************) are Windows way of hiding your password from people looking over your shoulder. If you see those stars, your password is saved. Just leave the password as-is, and you should connect without problem.
