What main features should a network monitoring tool include?
Any network monitoring tool worth its salt should be able to:

  • Filter by multiple criteria -- port, protocol, frame size, transport type and network interface
  • Record and playback network captures
  • Provide graphical statistics and reporting functions
  • Have some degree of programmability or scriptability
  • Work on any kind of networking system you throw at it
  • Run on multiple platforms, if possible
  • Have a CLI as well as a GUI version for quick-and-dirty work
