What is the proper name format for logging onto an AD child domain?

When a user logs on to an AD child domain in Windows 2003, do they logon as "child_domainuser_name" or "domainchild_domainuser_name"?

This is the correct format:

user@childdomainname

or the older style:

childdomainnameuser
