Why can't I delete a file on a Win2k Pro machine?

I'm trying to delete a file on a Win2k Pro machine. It says it cannot find the file when using command prompt. When using Windows Explorer, it generates an error saying the file can't be deleted/moved/copied, etc. How do you delete a file with a name that may be too long? And why did it let the file be created in the first place?
More than likely, the file name is corrupt, or it's using invalid characters. Try removing the file using its short file name. To find that, type dir /x at the command prompt and make note of the file name.
