Why do I get an NTDL Missing Error message?

I have a couple of Pentium 4 computers with Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. I use removable hard disk drives (except for the C drive). On numerous occasions I get the NTDL Missing Error message. How can I find out what keeps causing this problem?
It's hard to debug this one without knowing more about the circumstances. If you have your swap file accidentally placed on the removable hard disk, this might cause problems.
