I tried:
a) putting in two other CD/ROM drives.
b) Changing the master/slave jumpers and putting it on the slave device of the primary IDE channel.
The same problem persisted. I don't know what happened. The only thing I did recently was to install RealAudio v10, which could hardly have an effect.
When device manager indicates an error, it is usually very helpful to take a minute and look at the error code number assigned to it. There are over 30 error codes that can help you pinpoint the problem and resolve it.
