QUESTION POSED ON: 27 November 2004
We are currently in a Win2k infrastructure with seven domains. One domain has a single NT BDC running Exchange 5.5 and all others are DCs running Win2k Server. The plan in the next couple of months is to introduce Win2k3 DCs to the mix and upgrade the infrastructure to Win2k3. Are there any minimum requirements for the NT BDC (service packs, etc.) before a forest and domain prep is done?

EXPERT RESPONSE
You should really consider upgrading to Exchange 2003. Without removing the Windows NT 4.0 BDC there is really no point in you running Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 Active Directory for that matter. As long as you are running the Windows NT 4.0 BDC in the mix, you will not be able to utilize many of the AD features because you are in MIXED MODE. You should at least consider upgrading the Windows NT 4.0 BDC to Windows 2000. Exchange 5.5, with SP 3 installed, will run on Windows 2000. You will need to make sure that you have installed and configured the Active Directory Connector for Exchange to interact properly with the Windows 2000 AD.
