QUESTION POSED ON: 10 January 2005
We have recently completed an AD rollout with Windows 2003 servers in Head Office and Windows 2000 servers in the Branch offices. All FSMO roles are held between two DC's in the Head Office. But all the NTDS links have been automatically generated from the last branch DC and not from the Head Office DC's. How can we change the NTDS links to link out from the Head Office site?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Using Active Directory Sites and Services, you can manually adjust the NTDS Links if you like. Prior to doing so, I would recommend examining why the AD has automatically configured the NTDS links this way. You will want to double-check the FSMO role locations and review the network/bandwidth between the various locations. If you would still like to perform the adjustments manually you should create the new links and then remove the old ones. I would suggest changing no more than two links every 24 hours and performing thorough reviews of the event logs of all servers involved during the changes.
