QUESTION POSED ON: 14 June 2005
I have a domain controller server (Win 2000 server) and a child domain controller server (Win 2000). I want to migrate both into two new servers (Win 2003) that I just bought recently. How can I do this? What's the procedure?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
Build the Windows 2003 machines. Run the /DOMAINPREP and /FORESTPREP on the domain controllers. Then add the Windows 2003 machines into the domain. Lastly, run DCPROMO on the Windows 2003 machines. The Windows 2003 machines will now be Domain Controllers in the perspective domains.

If you want to remove the old systems you will need to move the FSMO roles from these servers to the new Windows 2003 machines. I like to use NTDSUTIL.exe from the Windows CD.
