QUESTION POSED ON: 29 April 2004
We deploy security patches in our environment with the SUS Feature Pack and SMS. Most computers in a particular department produce the "Pre-install reboot was required" message in the Advertisement status messages. The users of these PCs must reboot before the advertised patches can be installed. The weird thing is that these PCs are rebooted every night religiously at the end of the users' shift. Why does SUS think a pre-install reboot is required?

I would check to make sure the computers in that department are up-to-date with the latest service pack. You didn't mention the operating system version they are running, but I do remember an issue with Windows 2000 where this would happen.
