QUESTION POSED ON: 01 June 2004
I have two questions to ask you. First, do you have some white papers or documents that will act as a guide in configuring Active Directory of Win2K? Second, I am about to do some test clustering. The problem is that Windows is requiring that I have some form of external storage or SAN storage. Is there any way for me to circumvent that?

EXPERT RESPONSE
First, there are millions of pages on the configuration of Active Directory on Windows 2000. You could start with the Deployment Guide, which is available on the Microsoft Web site as well as being part of the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

For the second question, you can set up clustering to work as a single node cluster, which will not use external storage. You will still need to use Windows 2000 Advanced server. You will need to run the cluster configuration wizard with a command line parameter "localqourum". Do the following:
  1. From the Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Cluster Service, and then click Next. Finish the setup.
  4. The Cluster Configuration Wizard is displayed. Click Cancel to cancel out of the Wizard, and then click Next to acknowledge the informational message about the need to run the cluster configuration later on.
  5. From %Systemroot%Cluster, run "cluscfg -localquorum". This starts the Cluster Service Configuration wizard.
These instructions come from the MS white paper: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;245626&Product=win2000
