Berkeley National Lab wrestles with Windows patch management

The nation's oldest government laboratory is in the midst of testing two software applications to better manage thousands of Windows desktops, and to keep from drowning in a flood of patches.

How do you handle Microsoft's sea of patches?



 We apply every one that we need. It's not a problem. 
 We apply as many as we can, but it isn't easy keeping up. 
 There are way too many patches. We can't keep up. We just hope we have the critical ones in place. 
 Patches? We don't need no STINKING patches! 
 MS needs to secure products before they leave the mother ship, or release better service packs. This "patch me if you can" policy is insufferable.
