handtop

DEFINITION - A handtop is a full-featured portable computer that is slightly larger than a PDA, but much smaller than a laptop. Sometimes called an ultrapersonal computer, a handtop offers hardware, software, performance, and display cababilities similar to those of a laptop in a form factor about the size of a paperback book. Vendors propose that people could use the small portables not only as PDA and laptop replacements but as desktop replacements as well.

Handtops are especially well suited for travelers or mobile workers because they provide a good compromise in terms of functionality and portability. Unlike a PDA, a handtop can run the same operating system as a destop computer and can display Web content without modification. Most handtops have a small keyboard; many also have a touch screen and docking station. Products on the market or in development include the OQO, the Tiqit, Vulcan's FlipStart, and Sony's U50/U70.
