IT administrators who use Microsoft's server management software can look forward to spending a little less on the next version when it hits the streets.
The software maker released new pricing last week when it sent its Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 to manufacturing. The software should be available sometime in mid-to-late September.

Hamilton said customers who once purchased a base management pack and a separate management pack for applications will now purchase both with one license. "If you had a two-CPU server and Exchange, you would have needed four licenses," Hamilton said. "Now you only need one license."
Hamilton said the change was in response to customer feedback. "A lot of people told us it was just too complicated for them to know when they needed an application management pack."

A single server license for MOM will cost $729, a five pack will cost $2,689, and licenses for MOM Workgroup Edition are $499.

"They've built better knowledge into the product," he said. "If you manage a DNS server and it runs Windows 2000, you need to install the [Windows Management Instrumentation] layer for DNS. [MOM 2005] has a link in the knowledge base that tells you exactly what to do. It makes it simple."
In addition to new MOM pricing, Microsoft said it changed the name of its small business MOM from MOM 2005 Express to MOM Workgroup Edition. This version manages up to 10 devices, Microsoft said.
Hamilton said customers who use Microsoft's Systems Management Server desktop management software can look forward to SMS Service Pack 1, as well as two feature packs, later this fall.
