Microsoft releases free tool for Dell servers

Staff report

Microsoft this week released a free tool designed to better integrate Microsoft's desktop management software with servers made by Dell Inc.

Introduced in November at the IT Forum in Copenhagen, the Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates helps IT administrators using Dell PowerEdge servers to determine whether their servers need the latest Dell BIOS, firmware and drivers, and to more easily deploy the drivers and check on their update status, Microsoft said.

The inventory tool is part of a larger effort on the part of Microsoft and Round Rock, Texas-based Dell to integrate Dell's OpenManage 4 systems management software with Microsoft's Systems Management Server. The tool gives customers a unified view for tasks such as patch management and configuration management while using Dell PowerEdge servers.

The inventory tool can also schedule delivery and distribution of hardware updates. Microsoft has also released a "solution accelerator" to provide best practices guidance for customers using SMS 2003.
