Virtual Machine Addition betas readied

Margie Semilof, News Director
Microsoft released on Monday the beta for the 1.1 version of its Virtual Machine Additions, which should improve the integration and performance of virtual machines running on the Windows operating system.

This latest version of Virtual Machine Addition offers better integrated use of the mouse, optimized video drivers and time synchronization, Microsoft said. The additions will support the following operating system versions:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Enterprise Linux 3 (update 6), Linux 2.1 (update 6), Linux 9.0 and Linux 7.3

  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, Linux 10.0, Linux 9.3 and Linux 9.2

Microsoft added Linux guest support with Virtual Server 2005 R2. The company is currently offering the second beta of a service pack for this release.

The Virtual Machine Additions really make sure the guest OS runs as well as it can, said Neil Macehiter, an analyst at Macehiter Ward-Dutton, a Cambridge, U.K.-based consulting firm.

"If you are running a host OS in a virtual machine, it might make sure the curser tracking and control works properly," Macehiter said. "It makes it seem less like you are running in a virtual machine."
