Microsoft readies more Longhorn bits

Microsoft released a community technical preview late last week of its next version of Windows Server, code-named Longhorn.

Longhorn is expected to become available in either late 2007 or early 2008. A third beta is expected sometime during the middle of this year. The server will allow IT managers to save overhead by running the Windows Server core with only the services required to perform the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DNS, file server or domain controller roles, for example.

Some of the highly touted security features in Vista, such as Network Access Protection, will require Longhorn server to work.
