Although beta 3 of Windows Server "Longhorn" is due out shortly, Microsoft pushed out some code for its beta customers to test in advance of the larger release.

Microsoft has enhanced existing server roles and features and has made some user interface changes in the Server Manager tool. Also, PowerShell, the interactive command-line and task-based scripting tool, was added in this CTP, Snell said. She said beta 3 will still be ready in the first half of this year.

At Microsoft Management Summit 2007 in San Diego last week, Microsoft senior vice president Bob Muglia called Longhorn the "ideal distribution platform for virtualization" and said that Longhorn's hypervisor will be out six months after Longhorn debuts at the end of this year.
