The service pack includes the latest fixes for SMS 2003 as well as the asset tracking technology acquired from AssetMatrix Corp. when Microsoft bought the company one year ago. With the AssetMatrix technology, IT managers can create an inventory of more than 400,000 applications that can be recognized down to the patch level, Microsoft said.
Service Pack 3 also adds software license reporting, application views by category and tools that identify application upgrade options.
The next version of SMS, which is renamed System Center Configuration Manager 2007, is in its second beta and will be released to manufacturing during the third quarter of this year.
