Microsoft this week released an updated version of its Desktop Optimization Pack, a collection of utilities available only to customers that subscribe to the Software Assurance licensing plan.

MDOP 2008 adds two new tools: first is the Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset 6.0, which is used for debugging and troubleshooting unbootable PCs. The second tool is called Desktop Error Monitoring 3.0 SP1, which is used to monitor application and operating system crashes.

MDOP was released in October 2006. It includes applications such as the SoftGrid application virtualization software, group policy management tools as well as numerous diagnostic and recovery tools that were won following the Winternals acquisition.

The pack, an optional subscription for customers that have Software Assurance, can cost anywhere from $7 to $10 per year depending on the particular installation, Microsoft executives have said. The company plans to refresh MDOP on an annual schedule.

Virtual desktop technology developed by Kidaro will also be folded into MDOP at some point, said Microsoft when it acquired Kidaro last month.
