Lost in the avalanche of virtualization news from VMworld this week was Microsoft's release to manufacturing of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), which includes App-V 4.5 as well as a handful of other management tools.

Some of the components of MDOP, such as App-V 4.5, are available today, whereas others will be out the first week of October, Microsoft said. This version of MDOP includes the Asset Inventory Service 1.5, which takes an inventory of and analyzes all the applications on desktops so IT managers can keep an account of what is running in their enterprises.
The pack also adds Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) 3.0, which helps IT managers customize permissions that are set on production Group Policy Objects. This version of AGPM is compatible with Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1.
Microsoft said that in 2009 the pack will include Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization, which is the first release of Kidaro, a company acquired by Microsoft last March. Kidaro sold a client/server application that lets IT managers package desktop images into virtual machines that run locally on an end user's computer.
