Free Windows Installer repackaging tool available

When it comes to installing applications, IT administrators are often left with the choice of using clunky setup tools provided by the ISV or buying a Windows Installer repackaging tool.

A community of systems admins with site AppDeploy.com, which is owned by systems management vendor KACE Networks Inc., is offering an alternative called the AppDeploy Repackager.

AppDeploy.com is a community of about 25,000 systems administrators who share advice on application deployments.

The free tool converts older installation setup files used by Windows-based application vendors to a Windows Installer format, giving administrators a customized silent installation for automated deployment.

But what the tool also does is let experienced systems admins share their application installation project files with others in an XML format.

"A novice can use [AppDeploy Repackager] to see how an experienced admin deployed an application and then use that file to generate [his] own [installation] package," said Bob Kelly, founder of AppDeploy and senior product manager with KACE.

A beta version of the tool is available now, but AppDeploy plans to have a more feature-rich version out by Nov. 3, Kelly said.
