As for what's coming in the next big WSUS release, Shepard said no firm plans will be made for at least six months to a year.
WSUS 3.0 was released in April 2007 and offered performance improvements, some advanced deployment options, better reliability and an overhauled user interface.
WSUS SP1 has been available since February 2008. Shepard said that 450,000 servers sync up with Microsoft using WSUS and 600 million users scan against Microsoft Update.
Microsoft's aim for WSUS is to patch Windows products. IT managers have frequently asked when the tool will patch third-party software, but that is not in the cards, Shepard reiterated. WSUS is also an infrastructure for building on other Microsoft tools, such as Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, Windows Update, Forefront, System Center Configuration Manager, and others.
