Novell, Microsoft ready management pack for SUSE Linux

Margie Semilof, Senior News Director
Microsoft and Novell Inc. said the two-year-old collaboration to better manage Windows and SUSE Linux will produce its first fruit in the first half of 2009.

Novell will make available the Advanced Management Pack for SUSE Linux Enterprise for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 in the first half of 2009 to coincide with the release of Operations Manager 2007 R2.

Revised Service Manager beta expected within weeks
Novell has not yet set a price.

The management pack will supplement the monitoring assessment and deployment features in Operations Manager and let managers view information using one console, said Sanjay Sidhu, director of marketing and business development at Microsoft. There are seven Linux services: BIND, DNS, DHCP, LDAP, NFS, SUSE firewall and print. "So it's a deeper level of management and assessment that Novell will offer to customers on SUSE and Windows," Sidhu said.

IT shops will be required to have the latest release of SCOM.

Sidhu said it has not been determined whether or not the data would be visible in System Center Service Manager, which will be out in 2010. Service Manager will offer a central view of the IT environment.

Microsoft and Novell joined forces two years ago with the intent of improving integration between Windows and SUSE Linux.
