Windows 2000's TCP/IP network stack contains a feature called "media sensing" that can cause more problems than it solves. It allows Windows to detect whether or not a network cable is plugged into a NIC. To disable this feature:

a. Click on your network taskbar icon and adjust the properties
b. Add a DWORD value named 'DisableDHCPMediaSense' to the registry
c. Replace the NIC's driver or firmware with a new update
d. Replace your current adapter with a wireless one
e. Find the sense God gave the common dog
