Microsoft releases first service pack for SBS 2003

Microsoft made its first service pack for Windows Small Business Server 2003 available for download on its Web site on Thursday. The service pack can also be ordered on CD from Microsoft.

SP1 includes five downloads, so Microsoft cautions administrators to allow sufficient time to deploy them all.

The service pack includes the latest security updates on several Microsoft products including: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1, Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Component, Windows XP Service Pack 2 for client deployment and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Service Pack 1 for client deployment.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 and Microsoft Internet and Security Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 are also available in the SBS Premium Edition.

Susan Bradley, a Microsoft most valuable professional (MVP) for SBS, cautions administrators to read the release notes for SP1.

"The most useful thing about SBS 2003 SP1 is especially for the Premium [Edition] folks that finally get ISA 2004," Bradley said. "Even for Standard [Edition users], there are a lot of new security features in Windows 2003 SP1, including data execution prevention, and lots of fixes to volume shadow copy and backup. In general, it's just a good thing to be on the latest service pack."

Users choosing to upgrade from SBS Standard to Premium do not need to reinstall SBS.
