New ITMU update expected to boost scan performance |

Microsoft will issue a new catalog file and an update to its Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates this week that will help improve scan performance by anywhere from 40% to 60%, depending on a user's system configuration.
The new WSUSScn2.cab file, which is used for offline scanning, will have a larger archive that should increase scanning performance. IT managers can expect the ITMU update sometime this week, according to Rebecca Dias, senior product manager of System Center marketing at Microsoft.
The original problem, addressed in October, happened because the number of security releases in the file had accumulated to the point that the file was essentially maxed out. The catalog is where Microsoft stores software updates and other updates that address security and reliability issues. Microsoft said it is reducing the size of the file by removing updates that are no longer needed.
IT managers are being asked to upgrade their ITMU by January or by March at the latest. After March, the original WSUSScan.cab will no longer be maintained, Microsoft said.
The increased archive is the latest improvement to Windows scanning tools in recent months. During the summer, IT managers experienced a bug in the Microsoft scan engine that hurt performance while a client was undergoing a routine scan. Microsoft provided a fix within 60 days.
Microsoft is also preparing a fix for any application that uses Microsoft Windows Installer. The fix, which improves performance when scanning for and updating Office, is in limited distribution but should be available to all within 60 days.
