A new SQL Server release offers easy accessibility for road warriors while allowing IT administrators to keep data encrypted and secure if a mobile device is lost or stolen.
Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, formerly known as SQL Server Mobile and SQL Server Everywhere, was released to manufacturing Monday. Users can download the free software at Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Web site.
Mostly for mobile users, this latest version of Microsoft's database tool can be used with portable enterprise applications and by desktop users who want a more compact embedded database, the company said.
"This lets users synchronize data seamlessly [with the company's servers] while the security it provides allows IT departments to keep the data secure," said Francois Ajenstat, director, project management for Microsoft's SQL Server division. "Even if the device is lost or stolen, the data is encrypted and cannot be used," he said.
SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition has 128-bit encryption when mobile users synchronize their data with centralized databases, according to Microsoft. IT administrators can manage a SQL Server Compact Edition database on the client or device with SQL Server Management Studio, the primary management tool for SQL Server 2005.
The tool supports merge replication and Remote Data Access data synchronization.
More and more companies are providing new devices to their workforces -- smart phones, laptops and pocket PCs, Ajenstat said. But IT still wants to have control over the device and make sure it's secured. This allows both of those things to happen, he said.
