Installations of Microsoft's SharePoint have quickly multiplied in enterprises as Windows shops make this technology a priority.

At TechEd in Orlando, Microsoft detailed updates to BizTalk Server that include an interface for connecting applications in a service oriented manner. BizTalkServer 2006 R2 also brings improved asynchronous modeling for RFID projects, and integrates visual development software based on Dundas Data Visualization controls just purchased from Dundas Software.


The first Visual Studio 2008 SDK will contain a stripped-down version of the IDE that developers can use, royalty-free, to host custom tools or other programming languages.


At least a bit of open-source software was visible at Microsoft TechEd in Orlando via Interface21. The company released its Spring.NET 1.1 application framework and discussed its potential role in improving developer productivity through AOP and better dependency injection at two technical sessions. The software is available through an Apache-style license.


With the upcoming beta of Microsoft's Forefront, code-named Stirling, IT managers can look forward to managing security threats to the client and server from a single console.


Look for Sysinternals to expand its lineup of free Windows tools and adding others from the Microsoft Download Center.


At Microsoft's biggest Windows confab, IT managers learned about a new generation of security tools, IIS 7.0 integration with Windows Server and little else.
