IT managers using Exchange Server 2007 can have some summer fun applying a new update rollup containing six fixes released by Microsoft late last week.

The full list of Exchange 2007 fixes can be found on the Web page listing the description of the Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2007 on the Microsoft support site.

An early adopter of Exchange Server 2007 said he has seen only one of the problems addressed by the fixes. "Every now and then you get an attachment, but it does not show up [in the email] as being an attachment," said Jared Sahleen, senior technology manager at Lifetime Products Inc., a consumer products manufacturer based in Clearfield, Utah. "If you take the message and forward it, the attachment shows up."

Sahleen said his workaround is to use the forward button, but he said it does not help if you do not know the attachment is there. This particular problem has been responsible for at least one or two calls a week to his company's help desk, he said.

Although his company is generally happy with Exchange Server 2007, Sahleen said Exchange 2007 still lacks some of the common features found in a PBX.

One of these is the ability to create stand-in mailboxes – which is when a company has the ability to have a custom greeting using a public-facing mailbox, and that mailbox sends messages to another mailbox. But, Sahleen said, unified messaging is still in its early form, so he expects to see a lot of improvements in it over time.

Microsoft is also preparing its first service pack for Exchange Server 2007, which is due out at the end of this year. The service pack will include compatibility with Windows Server 2008, some improvements to Outlook Web Access, the management console and Standby Continuous Replication.
