Microsoft is making progress on its virtual machine manager and is expected to release the software to manufacturing by early September, according to Microsoft's new management czar.

Brad Anderson was recently appointed as the new general manager of Microsoft's management and solutions division. He took the reins from Kirill Tatarinov who now oversees Microsoft's business solutions division.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2007 will be the tool that IT managers use to manage physical and virtual servers.

"We developed this technology as, increasingly, customers told us they want a single, unified solution for managing both [physical and virtual servers], said Anderson on Microsoft's Windows Server Division blog. "I've met plenty of customers with physical servers in the data center operating at only 15% CPU capacity."

VMM assesses and consolidates server workloads onto a virtual machine host infrastructure to free up physical resources, Anderson said.

The user interface in VMM is akin to those found in System Center Operations Manager and Service Manager. Virtual Machine Manager gives IT managers the ability to support physical-to-virtual machine conversions for Windows Server 2000 and 2003, as well as virtual-to-virtual machine conversions using a PowerShell interface.

In an email, Anderson said his division will also release an updated version of VMM 2007 in mid-2008 that will "light up" the new features enabled in Windows Server Virtualization.

New Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager 2007 and Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 will also be available in the first half of 2008, he said.
