Four critical Windows patches coming in October

Microsoft will release four critical security updates next week that will affect Windows, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Internet Explorer and Office.

Another three security updates rated important are also to be released. One addresses denial of service attacks in Windows, one addresses spoofing in Windows and the third fixes elevation of user privilege in Windows and Office. Spoofing is when someone's legitimate digital identity is stolen and used by hackers, usually to conduct financial fraud.

These fixes for remote code execution vulnerabilities continue to dominate Microsoft's patches,

Patch with a plan in place
with this month's critical patches making a total of 39 such updates so far this year.

Microsoft is also planning to release three non-security, high priority updates on Microsoft Update (MU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). It will also release one non-security update for Windows on Windows Update (WU).More information about the non-security patch will be available next week.

To find out if computer systems need all or any of these updates, companies can use Microsoft's Baseline Security Analyzer and its Enterprise Update Scan Tool.

An updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool will also be released October 9 on Windows Update, MU, WSUS and Microsoft's download center.
