Windows IT managers using Microsoft's Forefront to protect Exchange platforms should install the latest Forefront upgrade, Forefront Security for Exchange Server with Service Pack 1, before they install the recently released Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Released last week, Forefront Security for Exchange Server with Service Pack 1, is the only compatible and supported Forefront release to be used with Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Microsoft said.

Forefront Security for Exchange Server with Service Pack 1 is also the only Forefront release that is compatible with Windows Server 2008, the company said.

This Forefront upgrade includes support for IT shops running IP v.6, better content filtering with keyword lists that can be installed to block profane email and better integration with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager using management packs that let IT administrators monitor Exchange Server 2007 protection levels.

Also, it allows immediate updating of its scanning engines as the Internet Protocol proxy configuration is being set up, and an option to let Microsoft Updates (MUs) work as the Forefront upgrade is being installed, Microsoft said.

The Forefront Server Security has a blog detailing all of the changes and improvements.

Exchange Server 2007 SP1 was released last week, too, with a number of improvements including standby continuous replication, or SCR, which gives IT managers a relatively inexpensive disaster recovery plan as they replicate an Exchange Server offsite.
