Microsoft this week made available its second release candidate for Windows Server 2008, keeping the server software on track for a late February 2008 delivery.

The company released the details on the Windows Server Division Weblog. The latest release candidate has added some Group Policy manageability enhancements called Group Policy Preferences, which were formerly known as PolicyMaker Standard Edition and Policy Share Manager.

Windows Server 2008 will likely be the most important major product release for IT managers in 2008. The server's initial release candidate, dubbed RC0, was made ready in September, at the same time that Microsoft released an evaluation version of its hypervisor virtualization technology, formerly called Viridian and now called Hyper-V.

Hyper-V will not be available until roughly 180 days after the release of Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft said that more than 1.8 million customers have downloaded Windows Server 2008 code so far.
