Microsoft's operating system platforms will get a break from patching this month, but several critical fixes for the Microsoft Office suite were released to prevent hackers from taking control of systems through Excel and PowerPoint.
The Windows security updates resolve several known and privately reported vulnerabilities for both of the Office programs, which would give an attacker full user rights.
Microsoft also released a cumulative update for six critical vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer to protect against remote code executions when a user views specific Web pages using the browser.
Other critical patches designed to prevent remote code executions were released for ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access, Microsoft Office filters and Microsoft Windows Image Color Management (ICM) system.
Patches deemed important were updated as well for a vulnerability that could cause systems to ignore IPsec policies and transmit network traffic in clear text and two for vulnerabilities that could allow a system to be taken over through the Windows Event System.
Also receiving a rating of "important" were fixes for possible information disclosure via a vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail, remote code execution through a Word file, and scripting of an ActiveX control in which privileged information could be viewed by an outsider posing as a logged on user through a vulnerability in Windows Messenger.
